Help identifying an amazing relish (?) served on an avocado (picture included)

My partner and I were in Kyoto a few weeks ago, and we ate at a delicious restaurant near Nishiki Market called Yasai Hori. We were served a variety of dishes selected by the chef, as they did not have an English menu.

The very first dish we were served was a half an avocado with a pink relish-like substance. We were blown away by the amount of flavor it had and how great it was paired with the creaminess of the avocado. It tasted like vegetables I think–onions might have been included? When I looked at it initially I thought it was fish, but there was a bit of a crunch to it and it had a very strong taste.

I would love to find out what this was. The server said its name as she was setting it down, but I think I heard incorrectly because I could not find it online. (I also did not write down my nearest guess and cannot remember now what it was.)

Can anyone help? Or, if I'm posting in the wrong place (apologies if so), could someone point me in a direction of someone who can?

Thanks so much!
